Predicted rankings for the shaggy dog stories:

Story 1:  2nd funniest

This story was similar to the word play in the snake story from class. "Nope, I'm a frayed knot." carries the double meaning feature that the class described as one of the things that makes something funny.

Story 2:  3th funniest

The punchline of this story makes a reference to the song, "there's no place like home for the holidays." It's similar to the chess story we read in class. However, for some one that has possibly never heard this song, they wouldn't understand the reference, therefore they wouldn't find it funny.

 Story 3:  4th funniest

This story also makes refernce to a song, supercalifragilisticexpealidocius from the film Mary Poppins. Again, if you are someone that is unfamiliar with this film and the song, this story is going to seem pretty dumb.

Story 4:  the funniest

I predict this story would be ranked the funniest because there are some elements in this story that tie to the feautures of what makes something funny that was stated in class. "Would you believe a lawyer that told you the Czech was in the male?" This has the double meaning "would you believe a lawyer that told you the check was in mail?" There is the element of word play and double meaning. There is also an irony to this story, since the sheriff shot the female instead of the male because he didn't believe the lawyer.

Fact
first reaction
reaction upon reflection
attitude towards event

Where were you born / Where'd you grow up? - Born in Newark and grew up in Maplewood NJ. Fact

How old were you when 9/11 happened? /Where where you? - Nine years old when 9/11 happened and attending Tusken Elementary. Fact

Discribe the events of the day to the best of you ability. - School had been dimissed without an anouncement of what happened. Her dad picked her up and tried to explain to her what happened but she didn't understand. When she got home she turned on the t.v. and every channel was the news accept for the food network. She remembered crying the intital reaction is an expected reaction, especially as a child and you don't fully understand why this was happening as she heard the news stories of the victims that died so she watched the food network to avoid it. Even though the younger ones at the time didn’t know exactly what was happening she still knew something was wrong. No matter how young you were you were still saddened by what happened.  He parents were on a highway or bridge that has a clear view of the towers when the attack happened. and hit a wall of traffic because cars had stoped and gotten out of their cars to watch. they turned around and went back to pick her up at school. fact

How did you feel about the event? - Though she didn't have a clear understanding of what happened she knew that people had died and that made her sad. Again, there was still an understanding of the grief everyone was feeling

Did you know anyone that was personally involved? - There were people in her grade who's parents went to NY to volunteer to clean the rubble. Fact

How did yo feel about the events that happend? - After the news talked alot aobut Al Qeada, Osama Bin Ladin and the Talaban.
Her parents became paranoid after the attack. They put up a security gate and installed an alarm system in their home. There was a lot fear and a sense of uncertainty after 9/11.

How do your feelings now differ from your feelings then? - She still feels sad about the victims and about the people that were up Muslim faith, middle eastern decent and Sikh who faced discrimination after the attacks. It is a nice change from the usual inital reaction of hate towards people of Muslim faith. Even though she was young she understood that it was wrong to discriminate, and that the hate was misplaced.

No matter how old you were during the 9/11 events, it was a very emotional time in our country. For the younger ones, you almost didn't really know how to assimilate what was going on. For the younger ones it was pretty scary because you knew something really bad had happened, yet you couldn't understand exactly why. As a child, taking in the reactions of the adults around you is the only way to make the most sense of it, and, at the time, the reactions of many adults weren't exactly the most rational. So not only was it an emotional time, but it was also time of confusion for the children in particular.

Where were you on 9/11? Interview
On this occassion I was the interviewer. I spoke to Danielle on what her 9/11 experince was. She lived here in New Jersey, and was a senior in high school when it happened. She had a very descriptive story, and remembered the 9/11 events in more detail than myself (I was only in the sixth grade).
Notes:
-bacckground info: older, remembers more.
-walked into class, saw it on TV.
-senior in high school
-teacher asked to shut off TV. Went to senior lounge to find out what was happening. School went on lock, everyone rushing out of class to get to loved ones. Reflective look.
-Then was a lot of anger; need someone to blame. Anti- Muslim sentiment. Now there's a sense of disappointmentafter finding out what really happened.
-sense of comrarderie, brotherhood, patriotic*. It's sad that things like that need to happen to get that.
-We need to remember; memorial is very important.
-*Has this faded? Some don't even think there should be a memorial anymore.
-Ended with emphasis on the importance of memorial. Telling our children what happened(going back to earlier convo of who makes history).

Q: Where were you on that day? How did you find out?
A: She walked into class and saw the news footage on T.V. As soon as the images of the plane crashing into the first building appeared, the teacher had her class shut everything off. There were people screaming, very scared and worried about what happened. Later on there was a school lock. There were students trying desperately to get out of school to get their loved ones.

Q: Compare & contrast your feelings about 9/11 from then and now.
A: At the time there was a lot of anger. There was very strong anti- Muslim sentiment, since everyone needed to put the blame on someone in order to feel (somewhat) better about what happened. However, after she found out what was really the cause of this incident (incompetence in our leaders) there was more a sense of disappointment in our leaders.

Q: What do you feel was the mood overall of the nation/others at that time? How does that vary from your point of view?
A: She says there was more of a sense of camaraderie and brotherhood following the 9/11 events. I point out that it is a travesty that these horrific events are often times what it takes for there to be sense of togetherness in a nation.

Q: Could you tell a story of a friend or someone you know and their experience?
A: Danielle's best friend lost a loved one. After they saw the footage in class, they went to the senior lounge to listen to the radio about what happened. She just remembers her friend screaming and very overcome with emotion.

Q: How do you feel about the memorials?
Danielle points out that there has been debate over whether or not these 9/11 memorials should take place anymore, since it has been eleven years since the attacks. She says that she feels it is very important to conduct memorials, since it is important to pass on to our children the significance of these events.

Analysis is defined as:
  • Detailed examination of the elements or structure of something, typically as a basis for discussion or interpretation.
  • The process of separating something into its constituent elements.
  •
To me, analysis is the process of breaking down the topic you're looking at into smaller pieces and that way getting a deeper understanding of the topic and its facets. It's very much like that brainteaser excercise from the first day of class; you look at a problem, pick out what is components are, and then from there you can figure out the solution. Analysis is very much a dismantling of a topic or problem. Analysis would come very handy for me when researching learning styles and enagaing students into learning. I would look into how to recognize learning styles, and how personality and interests can shape a learning style. Then, based on the students learning style, finding out then what are the best methods of teaching tailored to that particular learning style. There are many layers to reasearching this topic; I could probably go on and on, mentioning different layers. So I would apply analysis by dissecting my topicas much as I can.

It seems that the type of research in English and writing like to do is pretty broad. In this field there is a lot of room for individuality, so you can just dig in further into whatever topics interest you. Whether its research pertaining to your career or a hobby, the type of research can range according to the person; the author. However, to name something more specific, I think that many English and writing scholars lead more towards more humanitarian and social topics. I know social topics definitely interest me. Although there are many things I would love to research, I'm most interested in learing styles. As a student teacher, I think that the most daunting task of teaching can be addressing all the different learning styles in your class. In teaching it is very important to do this, since it will ensure that all your students gain a deeper and more accurate understanding of what you're trying to teach them. More importantly I want to research how to really engage my students in what is being taught, especially if its a subject they lack skill in or just dont like in general. It is very dangerous and very likely for a student to just tune out the lesson if its something that is challenging for them (speaking more specifically to younger students in pre-school/elementary). So the student needs to be engaged into the lesson. I would hate it for a student to walk out of my class not knowing what they need to know in order to succeed in their education. Researching this topic further would give me advice and skills how to avoid that.
